For me, resilience was born out of necessity, navigating the chaos of a war-torn country, surviving natural disasters, and rebuilding my life after personal losses. These experiences taught me that resilience is not just about enduring hardships but about finding meaning in them and using them as stepping stones for growth.

- Self-Awareness – Understanding your emotions, triggers, and reactions allows you to manage stress effectively. Self-awareness is the foundation of resilience, as it helps you identify areas for growth and development. When I lost everything in Hurricane Andrew, recognizing my feelings of fear and uncertainty was the first step toward rebuilding my life.
- Emotional Regulation – Being able to control emotional responses, especially in high-pressure situations, prevents impulsive decisions and fosters a calm and composed approach to problem-solving. I was just 8 years old during the earthquake in Nicaragua, yet I vividly remember how staying as calm as possible amidst the chaos helped me focus on safety and follow the guidance of the adults around me. This experience taught me early on the power of steadiness in uncertain times.
- Optimism – Maintaining a positive outlook helps you focus on possibilities rather than limitations. Optimism doesn’t mean ignoring difficulties but choosing to see potential solutions. After two divorces, I learned to focus on the freedom and dignity I gained, rather than the material things I lost.
- Adaptability – Resilient individuals are open to change and willing to adjust their strategies as circumstances evolve. After losing my first job in the U.S. because I didn’t know how to speak English, I had to quickly learn a new language to rebuild my path forward. From that moment to starting over as a single mother, adaptability became not just a tool for survival but a driving force in my journey.
- Support Systems – Building strong relationships with family, friends, and colleagues provides the encouragement and perspective needed during tough times. Leaning on my community after personal and professional setbacks reminded me that no one has to endure life’s challenges alone.
